Strong winds followed by rains uprooted electricity poles and trees in the wee hours of Tuesday, leaving residents a harried lot.
Residents had to sweat it out with no power supply for more than five hours. And trees and poles lying on roads disrupted the traffic.
“A tree fell on the electricity wires breaking the pole at Ghumar Mandi main market last night. People had to face inconvenience as the road was cleared by the MC workers only in the afternoon. And we are without power supply for past 11 hours,” said Navtej Singh, a resident of Ghumar Mandi. “Authorities need to be equipped to tackle such situations.”
Similar was the situation on Sham Singh Road in Civil Lines, Block-B of Aggar Nagar and Chandigarh Road, which remained blocked due to uprooted trees.
Dholewal resident Susheel Kumar said, “It is more than eight hours and there is no power supply in our area. Power outages and water-logging is a routine thing in the city during monsoon. Samrala Chowk, Dholewal Chowk, Transport Nagar, Tajpur Road and Chandigarh Road are vulnerable to water-logging due to poor drainage system.”
NK Sharma, chief engineer, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), said, “The poles have been fixed on some roads. Eucalyptus trees uprooted at Sahnewal might take some time to be lifted. But we will be able to clear the roads and restore power supply by end of the day.”
