The arrested former agriculture director, Mangal Singh Sandhu, had purchased properties worth Rs 1 crore at Kharar in SAS Nagar district in the past over a month, the police said.
The police claim that during interrogation, Sandhu revealed that he purchased a flat and a shop-cum-office at Kharar for more than Rs 1 crore.
Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said the police were trying to know the source from where Sandhu got the money to purchase the properties.
Sources in the Punjab Police revealed that Sandhu had six properties in SAS Nagar district, including three residential properties and three agricultural plots, in his and his family members’ name.
Sources said Sandhu’s wife owns an agricultural land measuring 8 kanals another plot measuring 2 kanals in Malaut. The police have also recovered documents of agricultural land measuring 18 kanals in Tarn Taran from Sandhu’s house. The land is registered in the name of one Charanpreet.
The police are also scanning the bank accounts of Sandhu and his wife. The accounts in two banks show heavy cash transactions. Police sources say there are frequent transactions of Rs 70,000 in the bank account of Sandhu’s wife. The amount (Rs 70,000) is deposited at regular intervals and withdrawn in a day or two, said police. Heavy transactions have taken place in Sandhu’s account in June, July and August, they added.

{{/usCountry}}Meanwhile, a Talwandi Sabo court on Tuesday remanded another accused in the scam, Ankush Kumar, owner of a fertilizer manufacturing firm, in two-day police custody. Kumar would now be produced in the court on October 8. He is the owner Ganesh Chemicals based in Bhawanigarh in Sangrur district that allegedly supplied spurious fertilizers and pesticides to owners of two stores at Rama.
