Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Civil Hospital is all set to get an ultramodern pharmacy and a sample collection centre, where besides free medicines for patients, samples for 50 types of free tests will be collected by the medical staff round-the-clock.
The construction of the facility that is coming up over 300-square-foot area is going on in full swing. Two separate rooms will be built for the pharmacy and collection centre.
The pharmacy will have the facility of refrigeration to ensure the effectiveness and potency of medicines. A separate facility to keep the collected samples safe will also be there. The pharmacy will have air conditioners too.
Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) executive engineer GS Sandhu said as there was no space at the entrance to the hospital, the pharmacy building is being constructed on the rear side. As per the government policy, such pharmacies had to come up at the entrance.
Sandhu said the building is coming up at a cost of around Rs 4.15 lakh. As per the government scheme, 42 types of blood tests, two of microbiology, five types of urine tests and stool test will be conducted. Details gathered from the civil hospital laboratory reveal that around 1,500-1,600 patients visit the hospital every day, and a similar number of tests are being conducted daily.

{{/usCountry}}Further, 159 medicines and 27 medical items, including syringes, bandages, cotton, medical tape, urine drainage bags, intravenous cannulas and blood transfusion sets, will be provided for free. At present, the civil hospital is providing these facilities at two separate counters in the building.
The hospital laboratory witnesses a huge rush, creating problems for doctors and nursing staff. The patients have to give the blood test sample at the laboratory. With the shifting of the collection facility to the new building, the hospital will not have to face this problem.
Health secretary Hussan Lal said all district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals and community and primary health centres will have such pharmacies. He said the government has sanctioned sufficient funds under the budget.
