A protest was held by shopkeepers of Mata Rani Chowk on Thursday against the death of a tea stall owner Raju, 32, who died on Wednesday while helping the municipal corporation officials in clearing encroachments in the area.
The shopkeepers of the area closed their shops and held a protest demonstration demanding arrest of MC officials of the tehbazari wing on charges of negligence in duty.
Traffic in the area remained disrupted for at least two hours due to the protest. The shopkeepers had earlier gathered inside the Zone A office near Mata Rani Chowk but later shifted outside, creating disruption in the traffic.
Kotwali police was forced to register a case against unidentified persons. The civic body staff was removing illegal encroachments in form of hoardings near Sagar complex at Mata Rani Chowk and where Raju used to install his tea cart.
Raju came in contact with a high voltage wires crossing nearby and he died on spot. He was taken to the hospital but doctors declared him brought dead.
The protesters demanded that the deceased should be given compensation by the MC. Mohinder Aggarwal, member of the market association, said mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria had assured that compensation would be provided but nothing was done.

{{/usCountry}}When the situation heated up political leaders, including BJP district president Praveen Bansal, deputy mayor RD Sharma, Akali Dal district president Madan Lal Bagga and others, reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters.
The leaders assured Rs 2 lakh to the family of the deceased and a job to his wife. On the other hand, shopkeepers also collected Rs 2.5 lakh and handed it over to the family.
The shopkeepers took back the complaint against the unidentified persons after assurance by leaders.
