Though the Punjab government has been making tall claims of providing better health services to people, posts of medical officers and staff nurses have been lying vacant at government hospitals in the district.
According to sources at the local civil hospital, 61 of the 169 posts of medical officers in the district have been lying vacant for long, including nine at Moonak, seven at Malerkotla, six at Sunam, four at Sherpur and three each at Longowal and Bhawanigarh.
Sources said about 40% posts of paramedical staff and staff nurses had been lying vacant in the hospitals of the district, raising a question mark over the government's tall claims of providing better health services.
Besides, 12 posts of radiographer, and four each of radiologist and anaesthetist have been lying vacant in civil hospitals of the district, which include Dhuri, Sunam, Malerkotla and Moonak.
Though several vacancies have been lying vacant for long, the government has shifted its attention to the drug de-addiction centres as recently it issued an advertisement to fill vacancies of staff nurses, pharmacists, counsellors and ward attendants.
CMO Subodh Gupta admitted the shortage of staff at hospitals saying, "We have sent the request for filling up vacancies. We are hopeful that the vacancies of medical officers and staff nurses will be filled soon," adding that steps were being taken to improve health services at all government hospitals of the district.
