Taking note of the media reports about the Sulabh scam at Rajindra Hospital here, the chief minister's office (CMO) has ordered a vigilance probe into the matter.
SSP (vigilance) Varinder Pal Singh has been entrusted the inquiry, after the CMO on Sunday sought a detailed report from the health department. Officiating director, research and medical education (DRME), Dr AS Thind said they had sent a notice to medical college principal Dr KD Singh to send the report with immediate effect regarding 'what actually happened' on the premises of the hospital.
Sources said the hospital authorities had faxed the reports and facts to the health department. The DRME confirmed that the department had received the report, but he refused to comment further.
Sources in the DRME office said the report clearly mentioned anomalies found while making payments to the "ghost employees" employed by Sulabh International for maintaining toilets and bathrooms for the past four years.
The report also mentioned the gross violations of the MoU signed with Sulabh as during the inspection unhygienic conditions were found at the hospital.
On June 17, HT had reported that salaries given to several "ghost employees" for maintenance of its toilets and bathrooms on the hospital premises for the past four years had resulted in a fraud of more than Rs 1 crore.
As per the work contract signed between Rajindra Hospital and Sulabh International in 2008, Sulabh was to hire 80 workers and three supervisors to carry out the sanitation and cleaning work in the hospital. The hospital was to pay Rs 4 lakh per month to Sulabh for this task.
The contract said the hospital would only pay the salaries of these 80-odd employees and the cost of maintenance would be borne by Sulabh.

But during the inspection carried out by a team of doctors on the complaint of the Class-4 union, it was found that Sulabh had made fake entries of workers in the records and had hired only 40-odd workers to carry out the job. The organisation was allegedly found charging salaries of 81 employees from the hospital.
