A local court on Saturday acquitted three in an abetment case involving the suicide by a family member. Those acquitted are victim Sanjeev Singla’s brother, sister-in-law and nephew. Sanjeev worked as an assistant manager with State Bank of India in SAS Nagar.
The court acquitted Rajiv Singla (victim’s brother), Anita (Rajiv’s wife) and Chirag (Rajiv’s son) due to lack of evidence against them.
On the basis of complaint of Kush Singla, son of the Sanjeev and a 15-page suicide note, the police had booked four people, including Sanjeev’s mother Indra Rani, who died during the trial.
On March 20, 2013, Sanjeev, 52, a resident of Sector 22, Chandigarh, had committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in the bathroom of a shop in Sector 22-C.
The police recovered a 15-page suicide note from the spot, in which Sanjeev had held Chirag and his parents responsible for forcing him to taking the extreme step. Sanjeev claimed that his brother’s family was making false police complaints against him.
In the charge sheet, the police mentioned that there was a property dispute within the family, following which a case of cheating was registered by Sanjeev’s mother against him.

{{/usCountry}}The defence counsel argued that the allegation that his client’s family filed police complaints against the victim and the latter had to go to police station every month was false since only one complaint came on record and that too was lodged by deceased’s mother.
The defence counsel further submitted that the 15-page suicide note was apparently written over a period of time and hence the suicide was not even an immediate reaction to any provocation from the accused.
