With the embassy of Burundi dispatching the original documents, the murder trial in the Yannick Nihangaza case is set to begin next week.
Yannick, a student of Lovely Professional University (LPU), slipped into coma after he was brutally beaten up by youths in Jalandhar on April 22, 2012. He succumbed to his injuries at his Burundi residence on July 1, 2014.
The police had contacted the embassy as original death certificate and medical reports were required to start a fresh trial.
In March this year, the police had slapped murder charges against the accused after Yannick’s father, Nestor Ntibateganya, had emailed the death certificate and medical reports to the city police, but the murder trial could not start for want of original documents.
Station house officer (SHO), police station-7, Navdeep Singh said he received a call from the embassy of Burundi two days ago that the original documents had been dispatched. He said after receiving the papers, the police would file a chargesheet against the accused.
On October 24, 2013, a fasttrack court here held Sumit Ralhan, Sahildeep Singh, Amandeep Singh, Ramneet Singh Uppal, Harsh Gosai, Jaswant Singh, Amanbir Singh Bajwa, Jaskaran Singh Kalsi and Rantaj Singh guilty of attemptto-murder. However, Ramneet, son of former superintendent of police Dharam Singh Uppal, and Rantaj are absconding.
A day after the attack, Jaskaran Kalsi flew to Australia on a student visa. He was brought back from Sydney in September 2014 and was sent to jail. On December 22 last year, he got a bail from a local court.
