In a major setback to the medical fraternity, renowned nuero physician Dr KK Sinha passed away due to various old age related issues at his residence.

He is survived by son, Hemant Kumar (60) and 3 daughters, Sudha (66), Chitra (58) and Mita (52). While Hemant and Sudha live in the state capital others are settled abroad.

Rajiv Singh, his maternal nephew, said that Dr Sinha was receiving medical treatment at a private hospital after he suffered injuries due to a fall recently. On Thursday, he was taken to the hospital because of some stomach ailments. He was discharged the same day, and doctors had described his health parameters as normal. On Monday morning, Dr Sinha was engaged in his daily routine till 9am. But, he complained of ill-health, and passed away around 9.30am, Singh said.

The doctor, well known in the medical fraternity across the globe, completed his MBBS from Darbhanga Medical College, Bihar in 1953. He then completed his post graduate and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) degrees at Edinburgh, UK. He joined Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), then called Ranchi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) in 1963, and was allotted quarter no 66 in doctor’s colony.

In 1976, Dr Sinha left RIMS and started private consultations at his present address in Bariatu. For more than four decades, his residence was thronged by patients across the country. His correct diagnosis and brevity of treatment catapulted his stature in the eyes of the ailing patients, many of whom who lost hope.

The waiting period for his appointment could be as much as 6 months. Because of old age, all official appointments were stopped since December 2018. But, his residence still saw a steady trickle of patients—including, emergency cases and those referred by friends, family, acquaintances and VIP’s. On April 7, Dr Sinha saw his last patient.

As a pale of gloom descended at his residence on Friday, several people visited to pay past respect including a host of members of the medical fraternity.

Dr Sumant Mishra, a family friend of Dr Sinha, recounted the visit of Khushwant Singh in 1980’s. “Singh had mentioned about Dr Sinha in his weekly column. A host of VIP’s visited him. Chartered flights to seek consultations even when travelling by air was a privilege were common,” Mishra said.

But, the doctor, who never used a mobile phone, treated the privileged and the commoner alike, he said. At times, there was a catch-22 situation when VIP’s tried to seek a quick appointment, Mishra added.

Dr Ashok Kumar, a student of Dr Sinha, said that the latter never missed his daily routine of walking and reading to keep abreast of the latest medical advancements. Besides, he made it a point to attend all international and national medical conferences, he said.

The cremation ceremony is expected to take place on Saturday or Sunday, family members said.
