Allu Arjun’s DJ makes a killing at box office despite piracy, hampers Tubelight’s business

On Wednesday, the makers of Allu Arjun’s DJ filed a case against some social media handles that streamed the film live via Facebook.

Allu Arjun’s Duvvada Jagannadham aka DJ may not have won over the critics but the film is rocking the box-office, leaving everybody who doubted its potential at the ticket window bamboozled.

While many expected the initial mixed reviews and mediocre talk might affect film’s run, the numbers have proved everyone wrong. The film opened big on its release day with worldwide collection of Rs 33 crore and at the end of its fifth day has grossed a whopping Rs 82 crore. In the US, the film even surpassed Salman Khan’s Tubelight on the first day, much to the surprise of its makers.

What’s fascinating is that DJ could amass such numbers despite high rate of piracy. On Wednesday, the makers of the film filed a case against some social media handles that streamed the film live via Facebook.

In the film, Arjun plays a Brahmin chef, and he apparently took his role so seriously that he gave up eating meat while shooting the portion where he plays the chef as he wanted to get under the skin of the character. His dedication stunned the entire unit including his director and co-star Pooja Hegde. The film marked the first time collaboration of Arjun and director Harish Shankar, best known for helming Gabbar Singh.
