Hyderabad police on Monday served notices on Omar Lulu, director of Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love, seeking an explanation on the controversial song Manikya Malaraya Poovi in the film that hurt the sentiments of the Muslims.
According to Syed Fayaz, assistant commissioner of police, Falaknuma, Omar was given 15 days’ time to explain why he had chosen the song Manikya Malaraya Poovi which had references to Prophet Mohammed and his wife.
The song is picturised on actor Priya Prakash Varrier, who became an overnight internet sensation, after the song went viral last week.
Some Muslim youth in old city of Hyderabad filed a case with Falaknuma police against Omar Lulu seeking ban on the song on the ground that it hurts the sentiments of Muslims. The police registered an FIR against the filmmaker under Section 295A (deliberately hurting the religious sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code.
An Islamic seminary in Hyderabad also issued a fatwa against the film.
In its fatwa, Darul Ifta Jamia Nizamia from Shibli Gunj in the Old City took exception to the song’s “objectionable references” to a love story between Prophet Mohammad and his wife, Khadijah Bivi, in Mecca. It asked the filmmakers to release the film only after removing the song.

Why did he take the name of the Prophet? That is why we issued this fatwa seeking that the song be dropped from the film,” said Jamia Nizamia secretary Ahmed Ali.
