Kvitova led 6-0, 1-0 when the Russian player decided she could not continue. She had received treatment from trainers at Rod Laver Arena near the end of the opening set.
The second-seeded Kvitova will next play the winner of Saturday's later third-round match between former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and American Vania King.
