Dharavi, which has a population of more than 650,000 and is spread over an area of 2.5 square kilometres, had set an example across India of containing the pandemic in its peak during which Mumbai and the entire state of Maharashtra had become the worst-hit areas.

The caseload of Dharavi now stands at 3,788, though the number of active cases of the coronavirus disease is 12, eight of them in home isolation and four in a Covid care centre.

Mumbai recorded 716 new cases of Covid-19 and 15 fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the caseload to 2,87,891 and death toll to 10,935, the city’s civic body BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Wednesday.

On Friday, 30% of Mumbai’s 14,559 hospital beds were vacant; 11% of its 1,786 intensive care unit (ICU) beds had no occupant; 32% of its 8,805 oxygen beds were free; and 10% of its 1,119 ventilator beds were unoccupied.
