The report on Monday alleged that the MT Hankuk Chemi had been stopped by Iranian authorities over alleged “oil pollution” in the Persian Gulf and the strait.

Drone footage captured by the Guard showed two missiles blasting out from covered positions in the desert early Wednesday morning, with debris flying up into the air in their wake. The Guard did not identify the location of the launch, nor the missiles involved.

However, 21 Indians are still in detention in Iran -- three from MT Riah and 18 from British oil tanker Stena Impero which was seized last week by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged violation of international maritime rules.

There are 24 Indians in the crew of the Iranian tanker Grace 1, which was boarded by British marines off Gibraltar on July 4. British authorities detained the tanker on the suspicion that it was carrying oil to a refinery in Syria in contravention of European Union sanctions.

The seizure of the Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz - the world’s most important waterway for the oil trade - has deepened a crisis between Tehran and the West that was triggered in May when Washington tightened sanctions, effectively barring all countries from buying Iranian oil.

A spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council suggested earlier Friday that the move against at least one of the ships was in retaliation for the British seizure, off Gibraltar, of a tanker carrying Iranian crude earlier this month. UK authorities said that ship was heading toward Syria in violation of sanctions.

The Federal Aviation Administration warned of a “potential for miscalculation or misidentification” in the region after an Iranian surface-to-air missile on Thursday brought down a US Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk, an unmanned aircraft with a wingspan larger than a Boeing 737 jetliner and costing over $100 million.

The Indian warships will “reassure Indian flagged vessels” sailing through the area, spokesperson of the Indian Navy Captain D K Sharma said. India has deployed INS Chennai and INS Sunayna and maritime surveillance aircraft.

The Pentagon released a video of the shot drone over the Strait of Hormuz, and also gave more details to saying the aircraft was at least 34 miles from the Iranian coast at the time it was hit.

Oil’s rally has gone into reverse in the last couple of weeks on speculation Saudi Arabia and other producers will pump more to make up for lost Iranian barrels. American drillers have also boosted output to a record and nationwide stockpiles climbed to the highest since September 2017.
