World’s 10 busiest airports: Check-in early or you’ll miss your flight

More than 100 million passengers flew through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2015, making the US hub the world’s busiest airport for the 19th consecutive year.

According to the latest report from the Montreal-based Airports Council International, passenger traffic to the Atlanta airport grew nearly 6% in 2015, shattering previously held travel records.

In addition to being the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, Hartsfield-Jackson benefits from its strategic location as a major connecting hub and port of entry into North America: The airport is within a two-hour flight of 80% of the US population.

It serves 150 US destinations and 75 international destinations in 50 countries and sees more than 250,000 flyers pass through its halls daily.

Meanwhile, China’s Beijing Capital International Airport has been steadily closing the gap, recording a 4% growth in passenger traffic last year for a total of 89.9 million travellers.

Dubai international airport jumped to the third busiest airport in the world from its sixth position last year.

Rounding out the top five spots on the index is Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

Chicago O’Hare airport, along with Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, were placed the fifth and sixth busiest airports in the world respectively.

The fastest growing airport was Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport which recorded a 16% growth in passenger traffic compared to the year previous. The results also reveal that air travel is on the rise, with a growth of more than 6% recorded in total passenger traffic in 2015 compared to 2014. Likewise, the percentage of total international passengers grew more than 6 percent last year.

The report looked at traffic records for 1,144 airports around the world. Here are the top 10 busiest airports for 2015:
