While Indian television has seen shows last for several years at a stretch, holding on to a spot is not easy. Given that a new show — and new competition — is launched every couple of months, sustaining viewer interest for long is no mean feat.
We take a look at five of the latest TV shows that have lost the popularity race and had to shut down due to various reasons. Beintehaa
What worked: This social drama depicted some Islamic customs that are rarely explored on TV before, for example, the Halala Nikah. The pairing of newbies Harshad Arora and Preethika Rao was quite appreciated.
What didn’t: The story ran out of steam and the recent change in the timing (from 9 pm to 11 pm) didn’t help either.
Lifespan: 11 months
Harshad says, "We didn’t want to drag on. We wanted to end the show on a high note. Making such a debut was a blessing."
Pyaar Ka Dard Hai
What worked: This urban story had interesting characters, in a family setting, where the focus was on the emotional bonds each shared.
What didn’t: Though it was doing well in terms of ratings, apparently, the channel wanted to end it to make space for Ashutosh Gowariker’s TV show.
Lifespan: 2 years and four months
Nakuul Mehta, who played the male lead of the show, says, "People loved the imperfect relationships in our story as no one was totally negative or entirely positive. Everyone had their flaws. I am glad we ended on a high note as we were the number one show in our slot."
Tumhari Paakhi
What worked: The chemistry between the lead pair, Iqbal Khan and Shardha Arya, worked well. The gradual development of the love story and the friction between the couple was interesting to watch.
What didn’t: Though it was doing well in terms of ratings, apparently, the channel wanted to end it to make space for Ashutosh Gowariker’s TV show.
Lifespan: 2 years and four months

Shraddha says, "The show had its highs and lows, but it was enjoyable. I didn’t want it to end. I learnt a lot while working on it."
Gustakh Dil
What worked: This show revolved around the journey of a spunky village girl, Lajjo, and an underdog who turns her into a successful woman. Away from her image of the hard taskmaster Ammaji, the talented Meghna Malik portrayed a different role in this show.
What didn’t: The ratings were lagging and moreover, the channel is undergoing a revamp.
Lifespan: 15 months
Actor Sana Sheikh, who was part of the show, says, "I enjoyed the graph of the character — from a village girl to a dancing star. Usually with lead roles, you get stuck with wearing saris, but I got to wear a variety of costumes while doing one role, which was fun."
Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya
What worked: The sweet love story with newcomers — Mishkat Verma and Kanchi Singh — in the lead roles.
What didn't: The show had a good run, but a change in the storyline (a few months ago) was a huge setback and hugely affected it. Lifespan: One year
Producer Rajan Shahi says, "There were false reports about the ratings not being up to the mark. The show had a decent run. It taught me lessons on what not to do as a producer."
