China has sharply escalated tensions in the South China Sea by launching military drills around Scarborough Shoal after the Philippines submitted a new nautical chart to the United Nations. Beijing says the move violated its sovereignty and responded with joint PLA and Coast Guard exercises covering patrols, reconnaissance and strike operations. The latest standoff comes as both sides harden their positions over one of Asia's most disputed maritime flashpoints. Is this simply another show of force, or could the confrontation be entering a far more dangerous phase?
