FIFA World Cup 2018: Know your venue - St Petersburg

Saint Petersburg Stadium, also referred to as the Zenit Arena, Krestovsky Stadium, and Piter Arena, was opened in 2017 and is the home of FC Zenit. Planning for the new stadium, built at the site of the former Kirov Stadium, began in late 2005, and the first construction works started by the end of 2008. The stadium was initially planned to be completed in 2009, but works were hampered by a series of delays, including a redesign to comply with FIFA requirements and fraud investigations. A retractable roof and a sliding pitch were included in the design to make the stadium one of the most modern arenas. This allows for the movement of a 120 metres by 80 metres pitch through electric motors with the assistance of air pillows.

The capacity of the stadium has been reduced to 56,196 for regular league matches, but will be increased to around 68,000 for the World Cup (Video credit: SNTV).
