‘It’s cool, it’s awesome,’ Russia rejoice World Cup win vs Spain

Fans in Moscow chanted “Russia, Russia” in all-night celebrations following their team's unlikely World Cup win on penalties on Sunday over 2010 world champions Spain. Russia have reached the quarter-finals at a FIFA World Cup for the first time since the Soviet era. Most Russian fans just hoped that this team would not embarrass itself in a home tournament. But now, ecstatically flooding the streets, they hope for more upset wins. Fans climbed lamp posts to cheer and some wore false mustaches in imitation of the Russia team coach Stanislav Cherchesov. Russia's usually strict laws against unsanctioned public gatherings have been effectively suspended for the World Cup, with Nikolskaya Street in central Moscow transformed into an around-the-clock space for fans to party.
