‘Homosexuality now legal, but long road to societal acceptance,’ say activists

The LGBT community across India is filled with joy after Supreme Court decriminalised Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. However, a majority of them say that there is still a long way to go before the community gets full societal acceptance. In a historic verdict, the SC has said that that any discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation violates fundamental rights. The apex court judgment also pronounced that history owes an apology to the LGBT community for making them fear for their life, and that Constitutional morality must override societal morality in this case.
