The Ministry of External Affairs on June 11 expressed deep concern over a series of incidents involving Indian seafarers in West Asia and called for an immediate end to attacks on commercial shipping in the region. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India attaches the highest importance to the welfare and well-being of its seafarer community. Referring to the recent attack on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman, he said India had strongly condemned the incident in which three Indian nationals lost their lives. Jaiswal said India summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over the attack. He added that the continuing incidents targeting shipping in the region are deeply worrying and are a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Calling for restraint, the MEA urged all sides to pursue dialogue and diplomacy to ensure an early return to peace, stability and security in the region.
