Kharg's monster leak: Iran’s oil spill delivers unforeseen hammer blow to US' Arab allies?

Published on May 09, 2026 04:28 pm IST

Tensions in the Gulf are no longer just military, they’re turning environmental. New satellite images show a massive oil slick spreading off Iran’s Kharg Island, one of the country’s most critical energy hubs and the launch point for the vast majority of its crude exports. Dark streaks of oil can be seen emerging from the island’s western coast and expanding rapidly across the surrounding waters. Experts estimate that tens of thousands of barrels of oil may already have leaked, with the slick covering a wide area in the Persian Gulf. This comes as the U.S.–Iran conflict remains “paused” only on paper, with naval blockades and military tensions still high around key shipping lanes. Analysts warn the spill could severely disrupt marine life, fishing, and coastal economies, and that unstable security conditions may complicate any cleanup operation. There are growing fears the slick could reach the shores of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE within days or weeks, turning a regional security crisis into a full‑blown environmental disaster.
