NATO's 'war-ready' plan hits wall? Germany faces major troop crisis near Russia's border

Germany is facing challenges filling the ranks of its flagship military brigade in Lithuania as NATO countries continue strengthening defenses along the alliance’s eastern flank. The unit, expected to reach nearly 4,800 troops by 2027, is part of Berlin’s largest overseas military deployment since World War II. Officials say significant personnel shortages remain, particularly in specialist roles such as engineering, reconnaissance, and information technology. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has warned that voluntary recruitment alone may not be enough, raising the possibility of compulsory measures if targets are not met. The development comes amid continued tensions between NATO and Russia over European security.
