How can India counter China-Pakistan joint ‘mission’ amid Ladakh tension?

<p>As tension between India and China along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh persists, the former's defence minister Rajnath Singh said that Beijing and Islamabad are creating a border dispute 'under a mission'. Chinese and Pakistani interests converge in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh area, especially on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. Singh's comments make it clear that the Indian government is looking at the big picture in the conflict which has stretched on since early summer and seems set to continue through Ladakh's harsh winter. The minister made the comments on the day that the 7th round of talks between Indian and Chinese delegations were held near the LAC to disengage troops, albeit with low hope of the same happening. China experts Srikanth Kondapalli, Professor of Chinese Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Atul Aneja, a senior journalist, discuss with Hindustan Times' Aditi Prasad the options that India has against this joint 'mission' in its neighbourhood.</p>

Hathras Ground Report: Victim’s kin on DM’s ‘kick’ & insult, want suspension

<p>The Uttar Pradesh administration continues to face heat over the actions of its local officials in the case of alleged gang-rape, torture and subsequent death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras. Hindustan Times' Shiv Sunny travelled to the victim's village and spoke to her family regarding their alleged mistreatment at the hands of the local authorities. They demanded suspension of the District Magistrate, claiming that he had kicked one of the victim's relatives, although it was not the father, as was reported by some media organisations. They also claimed that the DM 'insulted' them by refusing to show them the autopsy report, alluding to their illiteracy and inability to read English. The victim's family also rejected claims of the officials that the cremation was carried out with their consent. Although they denied reports that they were locked up inside their house by officials, they said that they locked themselves up so that police don't go ahead with a midnight funeral. Hathras Ground Report: Is victim’s family ready for narco test? Here’s the reply

<p>Even as outrage grows over the alleged gang-rape, torture and subsequent death of a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, the government has ordered a narco analysis of those linked to the case, including families of the accused, the victim, as well as police personnel. Hindustan Times' Shiv Sunny travelled to Hathras to speak to the victim's family. Reacting to the narco test announcement, they said that although they had nothing to hide, the act of questioning the relatives of the victim was highly objectionable. They also countered the police's claim that the gang-rape charge was levelled by them after a lengthy delay. The family said that they informed the Superintendent of Police about the rape once the victim regained consciousness, but they didn't get a receipt of the complaint. Hathras shocker: Former UP DGP Vikram Singh lists glaring lapses by police

<p>Former Uttar Pradesh DGP Vikram Singh has lashed out at the Uttar Pradesh police over lapses in handling the Hathras case. He said that there were glaring lapses by the policemen and listed four lapses including delay in filing the FIR and their attempt to push the episode under the carpet. Singh said that the hasty cremation could have been due to the threat of the law and order situation worsening He however added that the family members should have been taken into confidence and the last rites should have been performed by a family member and not a district official. The former top cop added that it is the police's responsibility to incorporate the relevant sections in the FIR and also said that the investigation should have been more prompt. A Dalit girl was raped by four men on 14th September and she died in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday evening.
