India vs England: Only thinking about making a comeback: Virat Kohli

Updated on Aug 13, 2018 05:34 pm IST

England opened up a 2-0 lead in their 5-match Test series against India on Sunday, after bowling out the tourists for 130 at Lord's to win by an innings and 159 runs on Day 4. There was some surprise around the ground in the morning when England skipper Joe Root decided to bat on rather than declare with a first innings lead of 250, especially given a weather forecast that predicted rain for much of the day. However, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran added another 39 runs before Curran was dismissed and Root finally closed the innings on 396 for 7, Woakes left not out on 137. Root's decision had no bearing on the result though, as India's top order failed again and the tourists could not be saved by their captain, Virat Kohli, this time - or by the weather. The openers, Murali Vijay - who bagged a pair - and KL (Kannanur Lokesh) Rahul were dismissed by James Anderson in short order as England's record wicket-taker passed 100 wickets at Lord's. Stuart Broad had Ajinkya Rahane caught at third slip for 13, bowled Cheteshwar Pujara for 17 and then picked up the prize wicket of Kohli, caught at short leg by debutant Ollie Pope for 17 off his glove. Broad took his fourth wicket of the innings in dismissing Dinesh Karthik with his next ball and India stood at 61 for 6. There was no way back from there and although Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin added 55 for the seventh wicket, it was only a matter of time until England wrapped up the match. Woakes and Anderson conceded just 14 more runs as they shared the final four wickets - India were comprehensively beaten. Anderson, who took 5 for 20 in India's first innings, finished with match figures of 9 for 43. Woakes had 4-43 in the game to go with his 137 not out with the bat - that all-round effort earned him the player of the match award. England are now two up with three Tests to play - the third begins on 18th August and at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
