German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul asserted Germany’s autonomy over domestic affairs, rejecting “external advice” following criticism from the U.S. administration. Speaking in Berlin alongside Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdóttir, he stressed that issues such as freedom of expression and social organisation are governed solely by Germany’s constitution. His remarks came after the U.S. National Security Strategy warned Europe of “civilizational erasure” without policy changes. Wadephul reaffirmed that despite disagreements, the United States remains Germany’s most important NATO ally, noting that shared values underpin the transatlantic partnership.
