Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed concern over what he described as the involvement of serving Ukrainian military personnel with illegal armed groups in Africa. Lavrov defended Russia’s Africa Corps, saying it operates at the request of legitimate African governments and supports counterterrorism efforts. Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa welcomed Russia’s role in Africa, calling Moscow an important partner in the fight against extremism. Ablakwa also called for the return of African cultural artefacts, reform of the global financial system and greater African representation at the UN Security Council. The remarks highlight deepening debates over security, sovereignty and Africa’s global role.
