After months of insults, Colombia's Petro to meet Trump: 'US will see our anti-drug fight...' |Watch

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has confirmed he will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on February 3, following weeks of escalating tensions between the two leaders. Speaking to his cabinet in Bogotá, Petro said the meeting would be decisive, marking a renewed channel of communication between Washington and Bogotá. Relations between Colombia and the US sharply deteriorated in early 2026 after a series of public insults. Trump branded Colombia a “sick country” and its leaders “cocaine makers,” while Petro accused the US administration of white supremacy and threatening Latin American sovereignty. Tensions peaked after Trump suggested that military intervention in Colombia to combat drug trafficking “sounds good,” prompting Petro to call for national mobilisation and vow to defend Colombia’s borders at any cost.
