- Amid China's extended military drills in the Taiwan Strait, which the island nation has termed 'invasion rehearsal', Taiwan's military began a live-fire artillery drill. The military exercise is a bid to simulate defence of the island against an attack from Beijing. The drills started in the southern county of Pingtung and will be held again on Thursday. "The drills will include the deployment of hundreds of troops and about 40 howitzers," Taiwan Army said. Accusing Beijing of using U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit as a pretext for military action, Taiwan's foreign minister Joseph Wu said, "China has used the drills in its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan."
