Watch | Heartwarming video of giraffe calf’s birth and first steps

Updated on Mar 14, 2016 01:52 pm IST

Zookeepers at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Australia captured the moment a giraffe calf was born and took his first steps. The keepers have named the calf Amahle, pronounced A-marl, meaning beautiful one in Zulu. The video also shows the little one's efforts to take its first wobbly steps about 40 minutes after birth. The zookeepers say that with less than 80,000 giraffes now left in the wild, new births such as that of Amahle are vital to ensuring the long-term survival of the species.
