In a rare mission, China flies Y-20 aircraft carrying missiles to Russia-ally Serbia

The Chinese government is yet to confirm the mission but a state media report said the delivery could have been that of the FK-3, the export version of the Chinese HQ-22 surface-to-air missile system.

BEIJING: China sent half-a-dozen of its giant Y-20 cargo aircraft over the weekend to Russia-ally Serbia to reportedly deliver an advanced missile system in what could be the largest overseas operation by the Chinese air force.

It’s rare for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) air force to deploy a large number of transport aircraft over Europe.

The Chinese foreign ministry said the consignment comprised “regular military supplies” but did not share details.

A Chinese state media report said the delivery could have been that of the FK-3, the export version of the Chinese HQ-22 surface-to-air missile system.

The delivery comes in the backdrop of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and western worries over an arms build-up in the Balkan region.

The deployment of the Y-20 fleet has been interpreted as a show of China’s strategic reach amid the turmoil in Ukraine in which Beijing has turned up as a staunch ally of Russia, refusing to criticise Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv.

“We hope relevant media can avoid reading too much into it. This project is not targeted at any third party, nor does it have anything to do with the current situation,” Zhao added.

Serbia purchased the FK-3 from China in 2019, in a sign of deepening ties between Belgrade and Beijing.

The weekend’s unannounced mission comes days after President Xi Jinping congratulated Aleksandar Vucic who was re-elected Serbian President earlier this month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was also among the first to congratulate Vucic who has openly sided with Moscow in its war against Ukraine.

Citing commercial flight trackers, the US news website thedrive.com reported that the six Y-20 aircraft were first spotted heading west in Turkish airspace late on Friday night, and later local residents took photos of the Y-20s, which allegedly landed in Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade.

“The mission of the Y-20s to Serbia remains unknown, with thedrive.com speculating that the aircraft could be delivering the FK-3, the export version of the Chinese HQ-22 surface-to-air missile system, to Serbia,” the Global Times saying in a report.

Analysts told the Global Times that the cargo must be large and heavy to require as many as six Y-20s.

It is a new record that an overseas mission features six Y-20s, and it is also very rare to see so many Y-20s being deployed at the same time, Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, told the tabloid.

“The mission reflects a significant improvement in the PLA Air Force’s long-range strategic transport capabilities, as well as the large transport aircraft’s logistics support and maintenance capabilities in intercontinental flights,” Fu said.

“The Y-20s’ appearance raised eyebrows because they flew en-masse as opposed to a series of single-aircraft flights,” wrote The Warzone online magazine in a quote circulated by Associated Press.

“The Y-20′s presence in Europe in any numbers is also still a fairly new development.”

During his conversation with Serbian counterpart, Vucic, Xi said: “Faced with great global changes that have not been seen for centuries, the two sides firmly respect each other, treat each other as equals and join hands in building a community with a common future for humanity, making a positive contribution to preserving international equality and justice”.
