Randeep Tamne, a Coventry-based man who posed as someone else on an online dating website and met a woman and raped her after claiming to be a police officer, has been jailed for more than eight years with his name put on the UK sex offenders register for life.
Tamne pretended to be someone else on the website and arranged to meet the 27-year-old victim at his home on July 30, 2016. He went on rape her and also extorted money from her. He initially denied the charges but later pleaded guilty in court.
West Midlands Police said on Wednesday that when the woman arrived at Tamne’s house, she believed she was at the wrong home as he did not look like the man she had been speaking to online.
She apologised and left but was then called by Tamne, who said he was a police officer.
"He later told her that she had committed offences and threatened to arrest her if she did not return to his home. She returned and was told she would need to pay a fine. She took money from the bank to pay him but was then told this was not enough," the police said.
Tamne then suggested sex as a payment. The woman said she did not want to have sex but was directed upstairs and raped. He then made her drive to a cashpoint and withdraw more money. It was agreed that further payments would be made to prevent her arrest.

{{/usCountry}}She went home and returned to Tame’s address with a further payment the next day. The following day, she disclosed the attack to her mother and they reported the incident to police.
Detective constable John Cleverley said: “The defendant was an online predator who sought out a vulnerable female on a dating site and took full advantage of her sexually, emotionally and financially after initially pretending to be a different identity.
“He later convinced her that he was a serving police officer in order to commit these horrendous offences. The woman has been extremely brave in reporting her ordeal and hopefully this sentence will be of some comfort to her.”
