As peace negotiations continue, Tehran has demanded the release of $24 billion in frozen funds. Furthermore, officials from Iran have stated that the release of the frozen assets is the only sticking point left in the discussions.
Amid the negotiations, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that Washington's stance on the deal and requirements is “well stated.” The top US diplomat added that there will “either be a good deal or no deal at all.”
In a big development, the US Central Command on Tuesday announced fresh strikes on missile sites in southern Iran and boats trying to lay mines. "US forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces," Tim Hawkins, a US Central Command spokesman, said.
Hours after the US Central Command said it launched strikes in southern Iran, the IRGC issued a statement, claiming to have downed an MQ-9 drone, and having fired at a US fighter jet that entered Iranian airspace.
Despite the strikes raising oil prices, lowering gold and tumbling markets, the US remains hopeful for a deal, but has issued a warning on the Strait of Hormuz, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the chokepoint would reopen “one way or another”.
What further dampened peace hopes was an announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he vowed to intensify strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel's offensive in Lebanon has been a key sticking point for Iran, but the US has maintained that it was never part of the ceasefire agreed upon between both sides.
