Juliana Stratton has won the Democratic primary for Illinois’ open US Senate seat, defeating Indian-origin Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, according to projections reported by The Washington Post.
The high-stakes race was triggered after veteran Senator Dick Durbin announced he would not seek reelection, bringing an end to a nearly 30-year tenure and setting off a closely watched contest among Democrats. In a strongly Democratic state like Illinois, The Washington Post noted that “the winner of the Democratic primary is almost certain to prevail in November,” positioning Stratton as the frontrunner to succeed Durbin.
High-profile backing and funding battle
Stratton’s victory was bolstered by significant institutional support and funding. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker endorsed her candidacy and contributed at least $5 million to a super PAC backing her campaign. She also secured the support of Senator Tammy Duckworth, further consolidating establishment backing.
Krishnamoorthi, meanwhile, ran a well-funded campaign of his own, benefiting from millions of dollars in support from the cryptocurrency industry, strengthening his alignment with crypto-related legislation during his time in Congress.

Historic milestone falls short
Krishnamoorthi’s defeat carries broader significance, particularly for representation. Had he gone on to win the seat, he would have become only the second Indian American ever elected to the US Senate. His loss means that milestone will not be achieved in this election cycle.
The race also had historic implications on another front. A victory by either Stratton or Kelly would mark only the sixth time a Black woman serves in the Senate.
