Lincoln Tunnel update: North Tube to NJ closed till 5am Thursday amid vehicle fire
Lincoln Tunnel’s North Tube to NJ will be closed 11pm–5am. Drivers have been asked to use the Center Tube and access via 40th St from 10th Ave.
Update: Lincoln Tunnel said in an update on social media that the North Tube towards New Jersey will remain closed after a vehicle fire from 11pm Wednesday to 5am Thursday.
Passengers going to NJ have been asked to use the Center Tube, and vehicles on 10th Avenue were asked to go right on 40th Street for Tunnel access to NJ.
Original story: On Monday, a vehicle fire following an accident in the Lincoln Tunnel near Manhattan towards New Jersey caused massive traffic delays.
New York City Emergency Management issued an update on the situation asking drivers to seek alternative routes.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation said in an update that the fire broke out at the North Tube of the westbound Lincoln Tunnel. All lanes of the crucial tunnel connecting New Jersey with New York are currently blocked.
As of now, no details on when traffic operations will return to normal has been provided by the authorities. Drivers are reporting that massive traffic congestion has taken place in the tunnel amid the fire.
The Lincoln Tunnel links New Jersey and Midtown Manhattan, carrying a large share of commuters and freight across the Hudson River. It handles roughly 110,000–120,000 vehicles per day, making it one of the busiest vehicular tunnels in the world.
