The US-led force in Afghanistan said on Saturday its troops had killed 10 militants, including foreign fighters, in an operation against the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani militant network.

Friday's operation in the province of Paktia, on the border with Pakistan, targeted leaders of the radical network and foreign militants known to have carried out bomb attacks, the coalition said in a statement.

The group, which straddles the border, was formed during the 1980s resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan under well-known fighter Jalaluddin Haqqani, although his son, Siraj, is said to have taken over.
"During the operation, the force encountered several groups of armed militants who opened fire on them," the statement said.
