The threat by Somali group Al Shabaab prompted Kenyan authorities to beef up security around Sarah Onyango, Obama's 89-year-old step-grandmother, the New York Post reported.

"In the wake of security challenges, including terror threats, I can confirm that we decided to enhance security at the home of Mama Sarah," said Kenyan official Francis Mutie.

Although not a blood relative, Sarah is the third wife of Obama's paternal grandfather, and the president often refers to her as "granny".

Bin Laden was killed May 2 in an operation by US Navy SEALs in Abbottabad city near Pakistani capital Islamabad.
