Arafat Rahman, 36, returned to Zia's Dhaka residence in the early hours of Tuesday, Dhaka's Daily Star and Prothom Alo newspapers reported.

Security forces detained him on Monday using emergency powers in a sweeping anti-corruption drive. The forces previously arrested Zia's eldest son, Tarique Rahman, on charges of extortion.

It was unclear why Arafat was set free.
