A former Chinese city mayor known as the “bulldozer mayor” for his major demolition drives has been sent to jail for 15 years on corruption charges, the latest in the case of high-profile official who have been indicted for graft.
State media reports said on Tuesday Ji Jianye, mayor of China’s colonial capital, Nanjing, for four years, was indicted for accepting bribes worth more than 1.8 million US dollars.
Ji, according to reports, accepted bribes during the time he held official positions between 1999 and 2012. “Ji took 11.32 million yuan (US$1.8 million) in bribes between 1999 and 2012 directly or through relatives and friends, from seven people and organisations in exchange for help in obtaining construction project contracts and job transfers,” the official news agency Xinhua reported Tuesday, quoting the Yantai Intermediate People's Court’s microblog statement.
The report added: “Authorities have also confiscated property worth 2 million yuan from the former mayor, who was nicknamed ‘Bulldozer Ji’ for his relentless promotion of construction projects in his city. Ji's wife, some mistresses, a driver and some real estate developers who had close relationships with Ji have also been taken for investigation.”
Ji was expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) late last year after he was described to be “morally corrupt” by central authorities. Ji is the latest to be dispatched to jail under President Xi Jinping’s high-profile anti-corruption drive in which he pledged to investigate both “flies and tigers” involved in graft; Ji would be considered a “tiger” in the drive.
