The death roll from flood-related incidents, including snakebite, drowning, diarrhoea and respiratory diseases in Bangladesh, rose to 984 on Thursday since the country experienced the first floods this year on July 30.
According to statistics provided by the health department of the country, of the total deaths, 837 were caused by drowning, 94 by snakebite, 29 due to diarrhoea and 24 were from respiratory diseases. It said a total of 178,684 people have been affected by diarrhoea so far.
According to the Flood and Disaster Management Ministry, over 13.3 million people in 46 out of the country's 64 districts were affected by the floods that also damaged over one million houses either completely or partially. Crops on 900,000 hectares were damaged completely or partially.
A total of 61,510 people, affected by the floods, took refuge in 167 shelters across the country.
Various relief goods from the ministry continued to be sent to the flood-affected people across the country.
A total of 133,720 tonnes of rice have been allocated for the vulnerable group-feeding (VGF) programme launched in 41 districts. Under the programme that will continue up to December this year, some 10 kg of rice per month would be distributed free of cost among 2,981,500 families.
