Turkey's Kandilli observatory says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has struck eastern Turkey. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli seismology center says the quake occurred at 1:41 pm (1041 GMT) Sunday. Its epicenter was in the village of Tabanli in eastern Van province, bordering Iran.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by faultlines.
In 1999, about 18,000 people were killed two powerful earthquakes that struck northwestern Turkey.
