Moderate 5.9 quake strikes near Fiji

The undersea quake struck at a shallow depth of 10.2 kms around 190 kms southwest of the South Pacific islands of Wallis and Futuna at just after 4:00 am (local time), the USGS statement said.

There was no warning in effect on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre website.

The region lies in the "Pacific ring of fire", a highly active earthquake and volcanic zone that regularly experiences quakes.
