The International Affairs and Human Rights Committee of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly has recommended scrapping of the 1950 treaty of peace and friendship with India.
Alleging encroachment of Nepal’s territory at several points by the southern neighbour, the committee submitted a memorandum to CA chairman Subhash Nembang on Tuesday suggesting inking of a new treaty with India.
After surveying disputed areas in the border from Jhapa in eastern Nepal to Kanchanpur in the west, the committee stressed the need to redraw the border based on old maps and comparing them with the present situation on the ground.
It stated that in order to maintain friendly relations with India, all unequal treaties including the 1950 peace and friendship treaty should be scrapped and new ones signed between both neighbours.
The committee also cited several examples of alleged land grabbing by India along the border especially in the Susta and Tanakpur regions.
Several parties in Nepal have been demanding scrapping of the 1950 treaty and India has also expressed willingness to amend or do away with the treaty.
