The Pakistan Army foiled yet another bid to bomb its headquarters in Rawalpindi when a suicide bomber was stopped at the outer perimeter of the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Monday, but the ensuing blast killed 13 in the adjoining market area. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) later claimed responsibility for the attack.
The new wave of blasts in Pakistan by the TTP has put pressure on the government to either start talks with the militant organization or resume a military operation against them. “There is too much indecision by Nawaz Sharif. Either we talk to them or fight them. Right now we are sitting ducks,” commented opposition leader Khurshid Shah.
Earlier this week, Sharif told newsmen that he wanted to “exhaust all avenues of peace before we talk about war.” However the consistent bombing by the Taliban have resulted in a national outcry. Earlier this week, 20 paramilitary staff died in Bannu when the TTP targeted them. Last week, the TTP attacked staffers of a news organization, killing of three.
