Security at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad has been enhanced ahead of Thursday's appearence of the prime minister before the bench in a contempt of court case.
The SC had summoned Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani earlier this week to present himself in person with regard to contempt of court in the NRO case. The court wants the PM to explain why his government has not taken action as per ruling in the NRO case.
The three options before the PM are that he will submit an unqualified apology, or he will apprise the court of what the government has done so far and ask for more time in which to take further measures, or else he will contest the charges.
In his address to parliament, Gilani said that he was happy to present himself before the judges as he held the SC in high esteem.
Gilani's detractors, chiefly opposition leader Nawaz Sharif, have demanded that the PM resign as he has gone against the rule of law.
Political analysts say that they dont expect much fireworks on Thursday. "I think it will be a muted affair. The PM will present himself, his attorney Aitezaz Ahsan will present the PM's case, and the judges may then adjourn the session," said Najam Sethi, a political analyst.
But there are fears that as the case continues, the court may disqualify the PM which in turn will create an unprecedented legal and political crisis in the country. There is a possibility that the PM may resign ahead of any such disqualification.
