Strong quake strikes off coast of Philippines

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey reported, but there were no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami warning was not issued.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey reported, but there were no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami warning was not issued.

The quake struck at sea at 2:47 p m (0647 GMT), just over 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Davao city, a major city on the Philippines' southern island of Mindanao, according to the US monitoring service.

An official with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said there were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.
