Of the rest, 145 were turned down and an equal number were issued notices of intention to deny. The remaining application were still under consideration.

Over 1,000 students from India were affected after the US immigration authorities shut down Tri-valley university in California earlier this year for violation visa norms.

Their plight — some of them were put under electronic surveillance — became an issue in India and the government lobbied with the US authorities to get a fair deal for the students arguing they were victims of a fraud and not its perpetrator.

The Indian embassy here issued a statement Friday saying it is “continuing its efforts with United States authorities for addressing the plight of TVU students”.
