"One of the things that has helped to propel our relationship with India over the past few years is, in fact, the very active disapora that we have in this country," State Department spokesman PJ Crowley told reporters on Tuesday.

As preparations continue for the president's trip to India, he said, "We did take the opportunity to inform Indian Americans about our goals for the upcoming trip" at the people-to-people meeting organised by the State Department last week.

Crowley said to help the president set appropriate goals for the travel, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and several other senior officials - across the government- have made a number of trips to India "to set the stage for what we hope to be and expect to be a very successful trip by the president."
