Star Trek Beyond, the third in the series’ reboot, had its first public screening on Wednesday and soon after, the internet was flooded with early reactions. And we can all breath a sigh of relief, because they’re all glowing.
Star Trek Beyond is the first film in the series which is directed by Fast & Furious’ Justin Lin, and a lot of the tweets you’re about to see talk about how the action-specialist has infused the film with his style.
Taking over from JJ Abrams, who left the franchise to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lin’s take on the material is being compared to the glory days of Trek: The Original Series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
Nimoy died in 2015 and several members of the crowd mentioned that the makers did pay respects to the actor by dedicating the film to him. There was also another dedication that followed Nimoy’s. Anton Yelchin, the promising young actor who played Chekhov in the series died on June 20. “For Anton,” read a title card at the end of the film. Some even spoke about a touching scene included in the film that acts as a farewell.
Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba as the villain. It arrives in theatres on June 22.
Here are the early reactions:
Was so happy watching Star Trek Beyond. Love this cast. Movie isn't perfect but it's funny, filled with great action, and isn't on Earth!— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) July 14, 2016
Really think fans are going to enjoy Star Trek Beyond. I did. Think most will be like pic.twitter.com/SHTfPsOFps— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) July 14, 2016
Thumbs up. I think most people are going to really enjoy Star Trek Beyond— John Campea (@johncampea) July 14, 2016
Bones has the best line of the movie. You'll know it as soon as you hear it!— John Campea (@johncampea) July 14, 2016
STAR TREK BEYOND does something magical: has big, bold action but puts these characters in, basically, a TOS episode. For me it was a dream.— Jordan Hoffman (@jhoffman) July 14, 2016
Actually, I can say that #StarTrekBeyond is terrific. Funny, exciting and touching.— Scott Collura (@ScottCollura) July 14, 2016
STAR TREK BEYOND is very entertaining, surprisingly earnest, occasionally dopey (but in a good way). I think Trek fans will really dig it.— Bilge Ebiri (@BilgeEbiri) July 14, 2016
STAR TREK BEYOND: slick, self-contained & has the best music cue of any blockbuster this yr. by 2016 standards, it’s the sistine chapel. [C]— david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) July 14, 2016
#StarTrekBeyond is a lot of fun. Leagues better than Into Darkness. I don't like it quite as much as 2009 though.— Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) July 14, 2016
Also, great and subtle tributes to both Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy. #StarTrekBeyond— Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) July 14, 2016
I'll also say that Chris Pine is better as Kirk in #StarTrekBeyond than he's ever been before.— Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) July 14, 2016
Just saw #StarTrekBeyond, and it's infinitely better than Star Trek Into Darkness. One of the most entertaining Trek films.— William Bibbiani (@WilliamBibbiani) July 14, 2016
Two #StarTrekBeyond dedications appear in the closing credits:— jen yamato (@jenyamato) July 14, 2016
"In Loving Memory of Leonard Nimoy"
#StarTrekBeyond feels like a TOS episode in a way that gives this new Trekverse a really long future. Fun, pretty dark, lots of fan moments— jen yamato (@jenyamato) July 14, 2016
Some of #StarTrekBeyond's best moments are Sofia Boutella moments. Great addition, kickass character, hope she comes back for more Trek 🔥— jen yamato (@jenyamato) July 14, 2016
Just saw Star Trek Beyond. I am allowed to say I really, really enjoyed it. Way better than Into Darkness & closest to spirit of TOS. 🖖— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) July 14, 2016
Had a lot of fun with Star Trek Beyond! Simple McGuffin story, but it has great energy, character utilization, and big blockbuster moments.— Eric Eisenberg (@eeisenberg) July 14, 2016
Star Trek Beyond is a well made scifi adventure. It just isn’t Star Trek. It’s a pretty good Mass Effect movie, though, if you want that.— Jeff Cannata (@jeffcannata) July 14, 2016
Simon Pegg's co-writing on @StarTrek Beyond balances humor & action which makes up for a few big hiccups in an otherwise entertaining flick— Jeff Goldsmith (@yogoldsmith) July 14, 2016
No idea what the hardcore will think, but I reeeeeally enjoyed STAR TREK BEYOND. This should have been the sequel to '09.— TheMoogly (@DrewAtHitFix) July 14, 2016
STAR TREK BEYOND is dedicated to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. It's brief and moving.— Don Kaye (@donkaye) July 14, 2016
Any TOS fan is going to love #StarTrekBeyond. The most beautiful Trek movie & the closest to the original series. A true space adventure!— Jason Inman (@Jawiin) July 14, 2016
Star Trek Beyond's character moments are its strongest quality. The crew's banter and conversations are as fun as the action.— Jack Giroux (@JackGi) July 14, 2016
