The Supreme Court on Tuesday convicted AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala in a 21-year-old disproportionate assets case and asked her to surrender immediately.
The verdict dashes her hopes of becoming the chief minister of Tamil Nadu because she will spend four years in jail after which she can’t contest the elections for six years under the People’s Representation Act.
Sasikala has been locked in a bitter turf war with chief minister O Pannerselvam over the control of the party and the state government.
After her conviction, Sasikala addressed AIADMK MLAs at a resort in Kovathur, where legislators believed to be loyal to her have been camping since last week, TV reports said.
Sasikala may now just spring a surprise “plan B”, party sources said.
According to them, she might pick KA Sengottaiyan – who was recently appointed the party’s presidium chairman – or powerful minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami to checkmate Panneerselvam.
There were reports that she may prop up the nephew of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa as the CM candidate.
Palanisami, a powerful leader from Salem, has contested and won four elections. He is the minister for highways and ports. Sengottaiyan is a leader with a strong caste backing in the western districts.
Soon after the court verdict, AIADMK’s Twitter handle quoted Sasikala as saying that “...Dharma will win”. The message was clear: she was not going down without a fight and let Panneerselvam have a field day.
